Gypsy in My Pocket
Hey Everyone! I'm Kyla Katona, a nattive of Detroit, Michigan and of Hungarian heritage. From my earliest recollections I nurtured a dream to travel and to immerse herself in the history and cultural influences of other lands. I wanted to absorb as much as I could from an early age, as time went on, the more curious I got. I loved to dive into books and create my own reality from what I learned! From the different languages, traditions, foods, pace of the people and their unique spirit. Within these beautiful experiences I'm constantly on the lookout for something new and exciting.
In 2010, that dream became a reality when I moved to Istanbul. From the outset, the beauty and antiquity of Turkish culture as expressed through the exquisite craftsmanship of skilled women weavers captured my imagination. I traveled and explored the country, my absolute favorite city I discovered was Cappadocia. Cappadocia was like a wild intense dream; the architecture, textiles, the stories and history. During my time in Cappadocia, I met a fellow expat, who had been living in Turkey for over 35 years, and we quickly became good friends. This friend believed in me, and wanted to show me the ropes, share the knowledge of textiles! And so began a 12-year journey of living and working in Turkish Culture that now blossomed into "Gypsy In My Pocket."
Now back in the United States, it is my mission to share the wisdom, history, and craftsmanship of these talented weavers with the rest of the world through this offering. Combining my love of history, textiles, bright colors and cultures, "Gypsy in My Pocket" features a unique variety of ethically sourced handmade and hand-loomed Turkish towels, Turkish washcloths, Turkish hand towels, antique kilim pillows, tea stools, poufs, Turkish Kilim coasters, upcycled Kantha blankets, Kantha bags, Moroccan Floor Poufs, and Moroccan ceramics. Each shares a story unique to the woman who created it and celebrates the ancient, women-centric textile traditions that are found around the world.
