In honor of our new branding and third year anniversary, we wanted to share the inspiration behind our new logo. The image of a cheetah comes from the book, Untamed, by Glennon Doyle. If you’re unfamiliar with the book, Doyle builds her narrative around a visit to a Cheetah preserve, where she encounters a cheetah named Tabitha. Born into captivity and confined to an enclosure, Tabitha’s visitors are told that she is content in her cage and that she doesn’t miss the wild because it’s something she’s never known. After watching Tabitha chase down a pink stuffed bunny that has been tied to a jeep, Doyle notices that Tabitha begins to circle the perimeter of her cage, She sees restlessness in Tabitha’s eyes, a yearning for the wild savannahs and the freedoms that her ancestors once knew.
“I knew what she’d tell me,” Doyle writes. She’d say, “Something’s off about my life. I feel restless and frustrated. I have this hunch that everything was supposed to be more beautiful than this. [She’d] look back at her cage, the only home she’s ever known. She’d sigh and say, “I should be grateful. I have a good life here. It’s crazy to long for something that doesn’t exist.”
“I’d say. You’re not crazy. You’re a goddamn cheetah."
Doyle’s encounter with Tabitha becomes a metaphor throughout her novel about how many of us live, caged and confined by societal expectations, feelings of shame and the fear of not fitting in. Doyle champions Tabitha as a patron saint for those of us who remember that we were meant to be wild and free and full of love. So here’s to Tabitha, and here’s to you. The wild ones 🐆💜
